Good Faith Estimate

Last updated: September 2026

Under the No Surprises Act, individuals who do not have health insurance or who choose not to use their insurance to pay for care generally have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges for health care services.

Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

  • You have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of the expected charges for scheduled health care services, including psychotherapy and psychological assessment services.

  • If you are uninsured or are choosing not to use insurance to pay for your care, a Good Faith Estimate will generally be provided in writing when you schedule services at least 3 business days in advance, in accordance with federal timelines. You may also request an estimate before scheduling services.

  • Your Good Faith Estimate will include the expected charges for the services planned.

If Your Bill Is Higher Than Your Estimate

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you may have the right to dispute the bill through the federal Patient-Provider Dispute Resolution process.
